How Much Does Sugar Cost?

Table sugar is derived from either sugar cane or sugar beet. As a commodity, it is one of the most consumed food ingredients. Sugar is brought into the country under various tariff-rate quotas that do, in-turn, bear some impact on its price. Coming mainly from Brazil, and India, the latter leads the world in consuming the sweetener.

Organic sugar - a 24 ounce bag of Domino organic sugar is among the costliest of sugars at right around $3.00, depending on place of purchase.

Granulated pure cane sugar - a 4 lb bag, store-brand sack is near $2.40 to $2.60, and roughly $.20 to $.60 more for the 5 lb quantity, slightly more for the name brands. Which is approximately $5.00 to $5.50 in 10 lb bags. Some of the lowest prices for 25 lb bags of sugar are found online (ex: Costco, Amazon) but the cost of shipping most often exceeds the price of the sugar itself at amounts close to $20 just to ship.

Brown sugar - which is granulated sugar that is treated with molasses, costs about $1.70 to $2.25 for a two-pound (32 ounce) box container. The single pound box of Light Brown Sugar or Regular Brown is about $1.15 to $1.40.

Sugar cubes - for hot drinks are about $1.50 for a one lb box.
